High Bentham - Plague Stone

We occasionally walked from High Bentham to Low Bentham by the road, but I cannot ever recall us observing the Plague Stone, located in the wall as you begin to drop down into Low Bentham. There is a good deal of information about this and other plague stones in the locality in Bibby's History of Bentham. Maybe it was not marked fifty years ago.

The text on the plaque says, "Tradition holds that this stone was used as a trading point during times of pestilence when villagers would place coins in the vinegar filled hole, in return for provisions supplied by outlying farmers. The stone irself may have originated as the base of a boundary cross in pre-Dissolution days, but its re-use as a Plague Stone would be circa 1597."
